‘Swift and Bold’
Sounding Retreat is an ancient military custom with its origins in the routine of life in camp, traditionally played to recall soldiers at sundown as the flags were lowered and the gates were closed for the night. Originally played on the drum, ‘Beating Retreat’ was replaced in Light Infantry and Rifle Regiments by the Bugle Horn, a more effective instrument when skirmishing, so these Regiments did not ‘Beat, but ‘Sounded’ Retreat. Over time this simple parade has become a spectacular of military music performed on special occasions.
I had the pleasure of being asked by my former regiment the Rifles to come to London Horse Guards parade for 4 days to capture and document the build up and d 2 days Sounding the Retreat by the massed bands of the Rifles including guest from Canada, our Fijian cousins and the wives choir. The whole event for any military band/regiment is rare to perform at Horse Guards parade, but as always in the Rifles unique style and ceremonial dressage put on such a show for royalty on both night, with His Royal Highness Prince Philip attending on the second evening. The two days was also a chance to raise valuable money for the Rifles charity Care For Casualties, which helps ex and serving members, some of whom were injured during active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The whole experience of the 4 days, the chance to catch up with friends who I had served with many years ago was like a large reunion. I have added a link to the Rifles video above for anyone to sit back and watch this famous regiment of the British Army past and present. Also if you would like the link to download a copy of the images from the Sounding the Retreat, then please email me at [email protected] or leave a message below and I will email you the link.
